Thursday, 21st May 2026 (Nokinketer News): The proposed no-confidence motion against Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) Chairperson Hukheto Yepthomi was officially withdrawn following the withdrawal of support by six councillors, leading to the cancellation of the special meeting that had been scheduled for May 22, 2026.
According to an official communication and order issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, the notice for the no-confidence motion was initially submitted on May 11, 2026, by 12 elected councillors of the DMC against the Chairperson.
The notice, which fulfilled the procedural requirement under the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, at the time of submission, was formally received by the Deputy Commissioner’s office and subsequently scrutinized. Following verification, the office had convened a special meeting of the DMC on May 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Office of the Dimapur Municipal Council for the purpose of considering the motion and conducting a floor test.
However, before the scheduled meeting could take place, the Deputy Commissioner’s office on May 21 received a formal written communication from six of the original signatories stating their decision to withdraw support for the no-confidence motion.
The office thereafter examined and verified the authenticity of the signatures and the withdrawal application. Upon scrutiny, the office stated that the withdrawal was made voluntarily and reflected the collective will of the concerned members without coercion or undue influence.
The order further noted that under Section 15(2) of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, a notice of intention to move a no-confidence motion must be signed by not less than one-half of the total elected members of the council in order to remain legally maintainable.
With the withdrawal of six signatories, the number of councillors supporting the motion was reduced from 12 to six. Since the total strength of the Dimapur Municipal Council is 23 members, the motion no longer satisfied the minimum requirement prescribed under the Act.
“In view of the formal withdrawal of the no-confidence motion by six members out of the 12 signatories, the foundational basis for the no-confidence motion dated 11.05.2026 no longer subsists,” the order stated.
Consequently, Deputy Commissioner Dimapur, Dr. Tinojongshi Chang, NCS, cancelled the special meeting scheduled for May 22 with immediate effect. The order also declared that the no-confidence motion dated May 11, 2026, would be treated as withdrawn and closed and that no further action would be taken by the office in the matter.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Dimapur Municipal Council was further directed to immediately communicate the cancellation order to all councillors of the DMC and ensure that an authenticated copy of the order is prominently displayed on the Municipal Office notice board and uploaded on the official website of the DMC for public information.
