Tuesday, 26th May 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Office of the Labour Commissioner, Nagaland, has issued an advisory directing all employers, industries, contractors and establishments across the state to adopt preventive measures to safeguard workers from the adverse effects of heat wave conditions.

According to the department, the directive follows a communication from the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India, dated April 20, 2026, advising all States and Union Territories to take proactive steps for the protection of labourers and workers during periods of extreme heat and high temperatures.

The department stated that ensuring the occupational safety, health and welfare of workers engaged in various sectors has become necessary during the ongoing heat wave season.

In the interest of public safety and worker welfare, all employers, occupiers, industries, factories, construction agencies, brick kilns and other stakeholders have been asked to strictly comply with precautionary measures issued under relevant labour laws.

The advisory stated that working hours should, wherever feasible, be rescheduled to avoid peak heat hours, while heavy and strenuous work should preferably be carried out during cooler parts of the day. Employers have also been asked to provide flexible work schedules and adequate rest intervals for workers exposed to outdoor or high-temperature environments.

The department further directed employers to ensure adequate supply of safe and cool drinking water at workplaces and provide rest sheds, shaded areas and cooling arrangements for workers. Proper ventilation and cooling measures should also be maintained wherever practicable.

Employers have additionally been instructed to keep emergency first-aid materials, including ice packs and heat illness prevention kits, readily available at worksites. Workers showing symptoms of heat stress, dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke are to be provided immediate medical attention and assistance.

The advisory also stressed the need for special attention towards construction workers, brick kiln workers, daily wage earners, casual labourers and other outdoor workers who are particularly vulnerable during heat wave conditions.

Employers and contractors have been encouraged to conduct awareness programmes on heat stress symptoms, dehydration and preventive measures, besides displaying posters, banners and safety advisories at worksites and labour congregation points.

The department informed that the circular has come into force with immediate effect and will remain operative throughout the heat wave season or until further orders.
