Mokokchung, 3rd October 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Political Science Association (PSA) of Fazl Ali College, Mokokchung, organised its introductory programme for freshers-cum-3rd PSA Debate on the theme, “Article 371A: Does it really protect the interests of Nagaland?” at the college auditorium on Friday.
Ten students took part in the debate, with five speakers each representing the For and Against the Motion teams. The For the Motion team was led by Bendangienla, while Chichanrhomo led the Against the Motion team.
The debate focused on the constitutional significance of Article 371A and its scope in protecting the interests and rights of Nagaland.
Molo Jamir, Notary Public and Mediator and President of the Mokokchung District Bar Association, attended the programme as Special Invitee and Critic. In his address, he explained that Article 371A provides constitutional protection in four key areas—religious or social practices of the Nagas, Naga customary laws and procedures, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga customary law, and ownership and transfer of land and its resources.
He noted that while Article 371A provides important safeguards, its scope is limited and does not give the State a general constitutional veto over all matters. At the same time, he said the provision is significant as it prevents the automatic application of certain parliamentary laws to Nagaland in the four protected areas.
Molo also drew a comparison between Nagaland and Tripura to help the students understand the different constitutional arrangements in the two states and their implications.
The debate was moderated by Yongkai Phom. Dr. E. Benrithung Patton, Associate Professor of Political Science, delivered the introductory note, while Dr. Lipokrenla Jamir, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, delivered the closing remarks.
The PSA said the debate was organised to provide students with a platform to discuss political and constitutional issues while developing critical thinking and public-speaking skills. The discussion also gave students an opportunity to examine Article 371A from different perspectives.
