Kohima, Friday, 22nd May, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Directorate of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Nagaland, has announced that it is closely monitoring the ongoing outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) affecting various parts of the state.

In an official appeal, the department informed that through all District Veterinary Officers and field staff, it is actively undertaking surveillance, containment, awareness, sample collection, and biosecurity measures to control the spread of the disease.

African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs. The department clarified, however, that it does not infect humans and is not a public health concern. Nevertheless, the disease causes severe economic losses to pig farmers and requires immediate reporting and strict preventive measures.

The department has appealed to all pig farmers, traders, transporters, village councils, colony authorities, and the general public to extend full cooperation with the Veterinary Department during this challenging period.

The public has been advised to strictly adhere to the following measures:

1. Immediately report any sudden sickness or death of pigs to the nearest Veterinary Institution/Office.

2. Avoid unauthorized movement, sale, or transportation of pigs and pork products from affected areas.

3. Maintain strict farm hygiene and biosecurity practices.

4. Do not dispose of dead pigs in rivers, streams, forests, or open public areas.

5. Avoid panic and refrain from spreading unverified information regarding ASF.

The department also acknowledged and appreciated the prompt support from the District Administration, as well as the tireless efforts being rendered by Chief Veterinary Officers, Veterinary doctors, Veterinary Field Assistants, and Mobile Veterinary Units who are working relentlessly on the ground to contain the outbreak.

The Directorate further requested all media houses and the public to disseminate only verified information issued by the department in order to avoid misinformation and unnecessary panic.

Reaffirming its commitment, the department stated that it remains dedicated to safeguarding the livestock sector and protecting the livelihood of pig farmers across Nagaland through coordinated scientific and administrative interventions.
