Wednesday, June 17, 2026 (Nokinketer News): A press conference on Census 2027 was held at the Kohima Press Club on 17th June 2026. The program was jointly organized by the Government of Nagaland, the Directorate of Census Operations, Nagaland, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Kohima to brief media representatives on various aspects of the upcoming census exercise.

            Addressing the media, Director of Census Operations, Nagaland, Dr. Kenie Miachieo, IFS, provided an overview of Census 2027 and its significance. He stated that Census is a union subject listed at Serial No. 69 of the Union List in the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution and is conducted under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948, and the Census Rules, 1990. He stated that individual information collected during the census is kept confidential under Section 15 of the Census Act and that the exercise is conducted in collaboration with State Governments and union territories. He further noted that the last census was conducted in 2011 and that Census 2027 will be the 16th census in the country and the eighth since independence.

            Responding to queries from media persons regarding the accuracy of Census data, Dr. Miachieo expressed confidence that extensive awareness campaigns and cooperation from the public, community organizations, village authorities and other stakeholders would contribute towards the collection of accurate and reliable data during Census 2027.

            He also informed that furnishing false information during the census is punishable under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948. Highlighting the digital initiatives being introduced in Census 2027, he stated that data would be collected through a mobile application, while an option for self-enumeration is also made available to the public. He further informed that a web-based portal would be used for monitoring and management of census activities, and House Listing Blocks would be created through a web-mapping application.

            Dr. Miachieo informed that in Nagaland, the Self-Enumeration period will be from 16 June to 30 June 2026, while the House Listing and Housing Census will be conducted from 1 July to 30 July 2026.  

            Speaking on the preparations undertaken by the State Government, ADC, Office of the Commissioner, Nagaland, Kelevituo Nisa highlighted the administrative arrangements and training programs conducted across the state. He informed that Nagaland presently comprises 17 districts, 118 sub-districts, 39 statutory towns, 5 census towns, and 1,606 villages for Census 2027. He further stated that training programs for Principal Census Officers, District Census Officers, Charge Officers, Master Trainers and Field Trainers have been completed across the state. A total of 6,134 census personnel, including enumerators and supervisors, have been deployed for the census exercise in Nagaland.
