Mokokchung, 13th July 2026 (Nokinketer News): The 212th Bhanu Jayanti was celebrated with enthusiasm and cultural pride at the Town Hall, Mokokchung, on Sunday. The programme was organised by the Gorkha Students’ Union, Mokokchung (GSUM) to honour the life and literary contributions of Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, the pioneer of Nepali literature.

Addl. Deputy Commissioner & Chief Executive Officer, Mokokchung Municipal Council, Atsungba Walling, attended the programme as the special guest. In his address, he lauded the Gorkha community for preserving its rich cultural heritage and said the celebration symbolised the spirit of a community built on mutual trust and unity.

Recalling the arrival of the Gorkha forefathers in Mokokchung, Walling said they had nurtured a long tradition of peaceful coexistence with the Ao community. He noted that the enduring relationship between the two communities, strengthened through mutual respect, family ties and inter-community marriages, stood as a shining example of harmony and unity.

Walling also paid tribute to his former teacher and mentor, late B.B. Gurung, stating that his guidance had greatly influenced his life. He said the merit award instituted in Gurung’s honour was a fitting recognition of his contribution to society.

Urging the younger generation to remain connected to their roots, Walling encouraged them to preserve their language and culture, continue promoting communal harmony and uphold the legacy of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya.

Managing Director of Lotus English Boarding School, Dharan, Nepal, Ganesh Rai, who attended the programme as guest of honour, spoke on the enduring legacy of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya and urged the younger generation to uphold their linguistic and cultural traditions while contributing positively to society.

The celebration featured cultural performances, songs, poetry recitations and other presentations showcasing the rich heritage of the Nepali-speaking community. Speakers also highlighted Bhanu Bhakta Acharya’s contribution in translating the Ramayana into Nepali, making the epic accessible to the common people and earning him the title of Adikavi.

As part of the programme, HSLC and HSSLC toppers were felicitated for their academic achievements.
