Mokokchung, 29th July 2026 (Nokinketer News): Two children lost their lives after a massive landslide struck a residential house at Penli Ward, Mokokchung, in the early hours of Wednesday, trapping members of a family beneath debris and mud.
According to a report from the Home Guards, Civil Defence and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), information about the incident was received at around 1 a.m. on July 29. Soon after, an SDRF team led by Company Commander Lanutemjen, along with SI Tingkam and 23 personnel, rushed to the site to undertake rescue operations.
Upon reaching the scene, the team found that local residents had already rescued the mother and the family’s eldest son from the damaged house. However, the two younger sons remained trapped beneath the landslide debris. The father was reportedly away at Alisopur when the incident occurred.
The rescue operation was carried out jointly by the SDRF, District Administration, Police, Penli Ward Colony Council, colony youths and local residents. Despite continuous rainfall, unstable ground conditions and the challenging terrain, rescuers undertook manual excavation and debris removal in a coordinated effort to locate the trapped victims.
After nearly four-and-a-half hours of intensive rescue work, the bodies of the two children were recovered from beneath the debris at around 5:30 a.m. and handed over to the police for necessary formalities.
The SDRF stated that the operation was conducted with utmost dedication and close coordination among all agencies and volunteers despite the adverse weather and the risk posed by the unstable landslide area.
