Dimapur, 11th August 2026 (Nokinketer News): A state-level consultation on “Strengthening Child Protection through Ethical and Responsible Reporting” was held at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur, on Tuesday, bringing together media houses and YouTubers to discuss responsible reporting of issues involving children.

Organised by Prodigals’ Home, Dimapur, with support from DKA Austria, the consultation focused on protecting children’s rights, privacy and dignity while ensuring responsible coverage of child-related cases.

During a session on field experiences and challenges, journalists Prasanjit Dutta, Sub-Editor of Eastern Mirror, and Musaraf Ali, Senior Reporter of Nagaland TV, stressed the need for greater legal awareness and sensitivity while reporting cases involving children, particularly children in conflict with the law and underage victims. They also highlighted the crucial role of newsroom editors in preventing reports from causing further harm or stigma.

Speaking on “Protecting Child Rights & Identity: From Law to Newsroom Practice”, Dr. Moalemba Jamir, Associate Editor of The Morung Express, warned that children can be identified even when their names are withheld. School names, localities, family details, photographs, uniforms and other contextual information can serve as indirect identifiers, he said.

Referring to the POCSO Act, 2012, and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, Dr. Moa emphasised that children are entitled to protection of their identity and privacy. He urged media organisations to avoid sensational headlines and use neutral, child-sensitive language.

He also cautioned against reproducing identifying information from social media or official releases without proper scrutiny, noting that digital content can leave a permanent footprint even after deletion.

Dr. Moa suggested that journalists check whether a report could identify a child through family details, locality or information available online. He stressed that verification and ethical reporting should take precedence over being the first to publish a story.

The consultation concluded with an open-house discussion on challenges and responsible approaches to child-related reporting, followed by a vote of thanks by Prodigals’ Home Director K. Ela.
