Nagaland, 13th August 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), led by Joint Secretary (DM-II), Ministry of Home Affairs, M. Ramachandrudu, IAS, conducted assessment visits to Mokokchung, Longleng and Mon districts this week to review the extensive damage caused by landslides, flash floods and heavy monsoon rainfall across Nagaland.

Mokokchung

A briefing session with the IMCT was held at Tuliyong Community Hall, Tuli Sub-Division, on August 12 under the aegis of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mokokchung, to apprise the team of the disaster situation in the district.

The programme was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Tuli, Imsenperong Wati, NCS. Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, DDMA Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, delivered the keynote address, while DDMA Nodal Officer Temsuwangshi Jamir presented a detailed report on disasters reported in the district during 2026.

The session was attended by Advisor for Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, A. Panjung Jamir, Advisor, Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, officials of the district administration and other stakeholders.

Following the presentation, the IMCT interacted with district officials on the challenges faced during relief and restoration efforts. The team later visited disaster-affected areas in Tuli Sub-Division to assess the extent of the damage on the ground.

Longleng

The IMCT held a separate briefing at the DPDB Hall, Longleng, on August 12 to review the impact of natural calamities that have affected Longleng and Tuensang districts since July 19.

Chairing the programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO, DDMA Longleng, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, welcomed the visiting team and said the meeting provided an important opportunity to highlight the challenges faced by the district and seek support for restoration and rehabilitation.

He informed that unprecedented landslides had severely damaged major roads and inter-village connectivity, virtually cutting off Longleng from the rest of the state. The disruption affected the movement of people, essential commodities, relief materials and emergency services. While restoration work has been undertaken by the district administration and local communities, significant rehabilitation remains necessary, he added.

Advisor, NSDMA, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, acknowledged the coordinated response of both the State and Union Governments, including the constitution of the IMCT to assess the damage and identify the requirements for relief and rehabilitation. He expressed hope that the field assessment would help convey the scale of destruction and facilitate further assistance.

Detailed assessments of damage to roads, houses, crops, livestock and public infrastructure were presented through PowerPoint by Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, DDMA Longleng, W. Manpai Phom, and Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, DDMA Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi, NCS.

Joint CEO, NSDMA, Dr. Jhonny Ruangmei, observed that the destruction of road connectivity had acted as a “multiplier of disaster,” disrupting access to essential commodities and hampering emergency response operations. He noted that Indian Air Force helicopters had been deployed for weeks to evacuate stranded residents, including more than 100 students, elderly persons and patients from Longleng headquarters, Tamlu and Namsang.

Calling for resilient infrastructure, Dr. Ruangmei said disaster intensity is expected to increase in the coming years and stressed the need to build infrastructure capable of withstanding future challenges rather than short-term solutions. He added that the NSDMA and DDMAs are working towards promoting disaster-resilient infrastructure across the state.

An interactive session between the IMCT and district officials followed the presentations.

Addressing the gathering, IMCT leader M. Ramachandrudu said the team had toured several parts of Nagaland and witnessed the extensive damage caused by landslides to roads, houses and livelihoods. He assured that all necessary measures would be taken to support restoration efforts and help restore normalcy in the affected areas.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by ADC and CEO, DDMA Tuensang, H. Berimong.

Mon

The IMCT visited Mon district on August 13 to verify damage caused by landslides, flash floods and flooding during the 2026 monsoon season.

Advisor, NSDMA, and MLA, Z. Nyusietho Nyuthe, described the July 19 disaster as unfortunate and assured affected residents that both the State and Central Governments were committed to supporting relief efforts and strengthening preparedness for future disasters.

M. Ramachandrudu said the team had inspected affected areas and witnessed the extent of the destruction and losses suffered by the people. He assured that all possible assistance would be extended for restoration and rehabilitation.

During the briefing, Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Wennyei Konyak, informed the team that continuous heavy rainfall had triggered floods and landslides across several parts of the district, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges and public infrastructure while disrupting connectivity to many villages.

He also presented a video documenting the impact of the incessant rainfall on July 19 and 20, which triggered catastrophic landslides and flash floods, resulting in loss of life, widespread destruction of homes, severe agricultural losses and complete blockage of critical arterial roads across the district.

The IMCT, accompanied by the district administration led by the Deputy Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police and representatives of civil society organisations, including the Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), later visited Defence Colony, Thamnan Ward and adjoining localities to inspect the areas worst affected by the July 19 landslide.
