Nuklutoshi seeks revision of minimum wages; Govt says proposal under process

Kohima, 4^th September 2026 (Nokinketer News): MLA Nuklutoshi on Friday raised concern over the low minimum wages paid to workers engaged under the government and urged the State Government to revise the rates in view of the rising cost of living and prevailing wage structures in neighbouring states.

Raising the issue in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the MLA pointed out that the existing minimum wage stands at ₹176 per day for unskilled workers, ₹210 for Grade-I skilled workers and ₹235 for Grade-II skilled workers. He also sought to know the steps taken by the government to implement the recommendations of the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) regarding the revision of wages for unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled workers.

Replying to the query, Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang, who also holds the Planning & Transformation and National Highways portfolios, said the State Advisory Board had met on March 12, 2025, following the recommendations of the NSHRC to consider revision and fixation of minimum wages in the state.

He informed the House that the Board had proposed revised daily wage rates of ₹297 for unskilled workers, ₹365 for semi-skilled workers, ₹400 for skilled workers and ₹450 for highly skilled workers.

Zeliang said the draft recommendations of the State Advisory Board for fixation of minimum wages for 2025 were subsequently referred to the Departments of Law & Justice and Finance for vetting and concurrence before a Cabinet memorandum was submitted for consideration.

He further informed the House that the Cabinet discussed the matter at its meeting held on March 23, 2026. Pursuant to the Cabinet’s directives, the proposal was re-examined by the Finance Department, which reiterated its earlier opinion that had already been conveyed through U.O. No. 199 dated June 19, 2025.
