Mokokchung, 8th October 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Department of Economics and Statistics, Nagaland, has revised the requirements for registering births and deaths more than one year after the event.

The revised requirements aim to strengthen the verification process before approval of delayed registrations by the District Magistrate or an authorised Sub-Divisional/Executive Magistrate.

For delayed registration of birth beyond one year, applicants must submit at least two of the following documents as proof of the date and place of birth:

  • Hospital or health institution discharge slip
  • Vaccination card issued by a hospital or health institution
  • School records or HSLC admit card
  • Government identity card
  • Driving licence
  • Passport
  • Pensioner card
  • Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC)
  • PAN card
  • Certificate from the Village Council Chairman or Ward Councillor

For non-indigenous applicants, the birth certificates of the parents and a valid Inner Line Permit (ILP) will also be mandatory.

For delayed registration of death beyond one year, applicants must submit either a medical certificate stating the cause of death or a certificate from the Village Council Chairman or Ward Councillor confirming the date of death.

The department has directed all District Chief Registrars of Births and Deaths, Registrars and other concerned authorities to strictly follow the revised requirements while processing applications. The notification has come into effect immediately.
