Mokokchung, 28th October 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has alleged large-scale deletion of names from electoral rolls, claiming that more than 7,000 voter names have been deleted in Mokokchung district, and urged party workers to intensify verification to ensure that no eligible voter is deprived of the right to vote.

The issue was highlighted during a press conference organised by the NPCC at Elate Hall, Mokokchung, on Wednesday, addressed by S. Supongmeren Jamir, Lok Sabha MP and NPCC president, and Pranav Shagotra, AICC observer for the “Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao” campaign.

Addressing the press conference, Shagotra said the campaign, initiated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, was aimed at exposing alleged irregularities in the electoral process across the country. He accused the BJP-led government of using the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to undermine democratic rights, allegations that form part of the Congress party’s ongoing campaign against the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Citing figures presented during the press conference, Shagotra said Mokokchung district had a total of 1,56,302 voters, of whom around 7,900 names had reportedly been deleted or were missing from the electoral rolls. He urged Congress workers to cross-check the figures at the district, assembly constituency, block and booth levels.

He said the data had been obtained by the NPCC president from government sources and called for coordinated efforts to identify cases in which genuine voters might have been wrongly removed.

Shagotra further claimed that more than 13 crore voter names had been deleted nationwide and said the Congress leadership was pursuing the issue through legal and political means. He referred to Rahul Gandhi’s earlier press conferences and protests demanding greater transparency in the electoral process and access to voter lists.

He also called upon Congress leaders and workers in Mokokchung to coordinate with the state leadership and participate in the proposed mega rally at Ramlila Maidan, New Delhi, on November 1, which he said would be addressed by Rahul Gandhi. He maintained that the party would continue its agitation until accountability was ensured over the alleged electoral irregularities.

Speaking at the same press conference, S. Supongmeren Jamir stressed the importance of Booth Level Agents (BLAs) and grassroots party workers in the ongoing electoral roll revision exercise.

He said the reopening of house-to-house verification provided an opportunity to check whether eligible voters had been wrongly deleted and urged party workers to take the process seriously. While the Election Commission had cited different reasons for the deletions, he said each case needed to be carefully verified to ensure that the reasons were genuine.

Jamir cited figures of more than 13.47 crore voter deletions nationwide and around 1.57 lakh in Nagaland, alleging that the issue had raised serious concerns over electoral transparency. He said sustained efforts by Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and other opposition leaders had helped bring the matter into public focus.

He also raised concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission and called for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

Outlining the opposition’s demands, Jamir said the INDIA bloc was seeking the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, replacement of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with ballot papers, and further electoral reforms. He said the opposition would continue its agitation until justice was delivered to voters whose names had been wrongly deleted.

Referring to the proposed protests in New Delhi on October 30 and 31, followed by the November 1 rally, he urged party workers to remain united and ensure that every eligible voter in Mokokchung was given an opportunity to exercise their democratic right.

He emphasised that cases involving voters who had become untraceable should be examined separately and carefully, adding that the primary objective was to ensure that no genuine voter was excluded because of an incorrect deletion.

NPCC general secretary and Mokokchung district in-charge Akuonuo Miachieo and Mokokchung District Congress Committee president I. Temsu Jamir also spoke at the press conference.
