Mokokchung, 25th May 2026 (Nokinketer News): In a decisive move to overhaul waste management in the town, the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) has announced the centralization of all garbage collection services, effective April 2026. The decision follows a high-level coordination meeting held on March 16, 2026, between the MMC and Ward Authorities.

During the meeting, the roles and responsibilities of both bodies regarding sanitation maintenance were detailed. As per the new resolution, the MMC will directly manage the collection and disposal of waste from all wards, moving away from fragmented local systems.

To regulate the new system, the MMC has issued Sanitation Cards to every household under its jurisdiction. A monthly sanitation fee of Rs. 50/- (Rupees Fifty) per household will be collected by the respective Ward Authorities, who are then required to submit the accumulated fees to the MMC once every quarter (three months).

In a public notice issued by Atsungba Walling, ADC & Chief Executive Officer of the MMC, residents have been warned that the Sanitation Card is no longer just a receipt for garbage collection. It will serve as a crucial document for availing various other services, entitlements, and official works processed through the MMC office.

“Households failing to obtain or maintain the Sanitation Card and payment records shall not be entertained or considered eligible for certain services and works under the MMC,” the notification stated.

The MMC has also resolved to conduct a comprehensive review of the new system’s implementation and progress after a period of six months.

Authorities have appealed to all residents of Mokokchung town to extend full cooperation to Ward Authorities and ensure timely payment of the sanitation fees to facilitate the smooth functioning of the town’s cleanliness drive.

“The cooperation and support of all citizens in maintaining cleanliness and proper waste management in Mokokchung town shall be highly appreciated,” the CEO added.
