
Village authorities directed to enforce single-use plastic ban across Nagaland
Tuesday, 2nd June, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Urban Development Department, Nagaland has re-notified and directed all village authorities across the state to strictly enforce the guidelines relating to the total ban on single-use plastic.
The directive has been issued in pursuance of the Supreme Court judgment dated February 14, 2026, and in accordance with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021, notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
The department also reiterated its earlier notification, No. UDD/7-GEN/07-PWM/2018(Pt.-1), issued on June 17, 2019, concerning the prohibition of single-use plastic products in the state.
Through the renewed notification, all village authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the ban and take necessary measures to curb the use of single-use plastic in their respective jurisdictions.
The move is aimed at strengthening plastic waste management practices and promoting environmental protection across Nagaland.
1. Single Use Plastic (SUP) vide UDD Notification Dated 17th June 2019.
- All plastic carry bags with or without handles, irrespective of thickness and size.
- Plastic cutleries including plates, cups, forks, spoons, straws etc. shall be prohibited
- Cutlery and other decorative made of Styrofoam (thermocol).
- Polythene
- Nylon
- Poly Vinyl Carbohydrates (PVC)
- Poly Propylene and Poly styrene
2. Single Use Plastic (SUP) Items vide UDD Notification Dated 6th December 2020.
Use of Flex Banners/Boards/Posters by departments/institutions/Government agencies during functions/Programs.
3. SUP items vide UDD Notification dated 11th March 2022.
- Ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy Sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration’
- Plates, Cups, Forks, Spoons, Knives, Straws, Trays, Wrappings or Packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarettes packets, plastic or poly-vinyl chloride (PVC) banners less than 100 microns, stirrers.
4. Plastic item vide UDD Notification dated 29th November 2018.
All Deputy Commissioners are hereby directed to ensure that the above directives are promptly disseminated to the Village authorities for immediate and strict compliance.
The Deputy Commissioners will also take measures for ensuring mandatory collection safe disposal of such banned Single Use Plastic (SUP) waste by all the Village authorities.
