Mokokchung, July 24 (Nokinketer News): The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Mokokchung, has said that incessant rainfall on July 18 &19, followed by continued rain and thunderstorms, triggered widespread landslides, mudslides, waterlogging and severe flooding across the district, with Tuli sub-division being the worst affected.

According to a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner and DDMA Chairman Ajit Kumar Verma (IAS), the disaster caused extensive damage to roads, power transmission lines, mobile and internet networks, while disrupting the supply of essential services across several parts of the district.

Tuli town and its adjoining areas witnessed severe flooding and landslides, forcing residents in low-lying areas to evacuate. The calamity also disrupted road and telecom connectivity, water supply, electricity and the transportation of essential commodities.

The DDMA said immediate response and relief measures were initiated, with affected families shifted to safer locations. Relief materials have been distributed, relief camps established for displaced residents, and water tankers deployed to provide drinking water and assist in clearing flood debris from inundated houses.

The administration informed that telecom connectivity has largely been restored and is being monitored to ensure stable services. Medical camps have also been set up, while the Mobile Medical Unit has been activated. Essential medicines have been dispatched from Mokokchung headquarters, and health workers are conducting surveillance to prevent outbreaks of vector-borne diseases while carrying out public awareness activities.

The release stated that National Highway-02, connecting Mokokchung to Amguri via Tuli, has suffered extensive damage due to landslides at multiple locations. Major damage has been reported between Chuchuyimlang and Unger villages, as well as along a long stretch between Tuli town and Tzudikong, resulting in the complete disruption of interstate connectivity through the highway.

DDMA, in coordination with the PWD (National Highways) and other agencies, is working to restore connectivity through repairs and alternative routes.

With NH-02 remaining inaccessible, NH-702D connecting Mokokchung and Mariani has become the district’s only lifeline for transportation and the movement of essential commodities. The district administration, along with PWD (NH) and other stakeholders, has imposed traffic restrictions to ensure the road remains open for commuters and the uninterrupted supply of essential goods.

The administration also reported that highways connecting Mokokchung with Mon and Longleng districts have been severely damaged due to major landslides, disrupting inter-district connectivity. Restoration work is underway on the Changtongya-Longleng road, the Merangkong-Tamlu route and other blocked roads in coordination with NHIDCL, PWD (R&B) and other agencies.

Road access to Salulamang and Yajang C villages has also been completely cut off, with area administrative officers, PWD (R&B), village councils and local stakeholders working to restore connectivity.

Water supply infrastructure has been damaged in several parts of the district, particularly in Tuli sub-division. The administration, in coordination with the Public Health Engineering Department, has deployed personnel to identify and repair damaged pipelines.

Power transmission lines have also been affected, especially those supplying villages under Chuchuyimlang Administrative Circle. The Power Department is undertaking restoration work under the supervision of the concerned area administrative officer.

To strengthen disaster response, the DDMA has designated all area administrative officers as Incident Commanders in their respective jurisdictions. It has also activated the District Emergency Operation Centre at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office and published emergency contact numbers for reporting disaster-related incidents and seeking assistance. Measures have also been initiated to ensure the continuous availability of essential commodities across the district.

The DDMA expressed appreciation to administrative officers, government departments, security agencies, civil society organisations, village, colony and town authorities, and other stakeholders for their timely support during the crisis.

The authority also acknowledged the support of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), the Home Department and the Government of Nagaland under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio for releasing an initial assistance of Rs. 36 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to facilitate immediate relief and response measures in the district.
