Tuesday, July 28, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs), under the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), conducted the second quarterly meetings of the Under Trial Review Committees (UTRCs) across the state for the April–June quarter, resulting in the release of 12 undertrial prisoners (UTPs).

According to an official release, the 12 UTPs were released from the Central Jail and 10 district jails after being recommended for bail or other appropriate legal relief.

The review found that, out of 333 undertrial prisoners (319 men and 14 women) and 111 convicts (110 men and one woman) lodged in various prisons across Nagaland, 26 UTPs were eligible for release under different legal provisions. Following the recommendations, DLSAs directed panel lawyers to file bail applications and other necessary petitions. Of the 26 recommended cases, 12 prisoners were subsequently released after securing bail or completion of legal formalities.

The committees also reviewed the status of inmates requiring medical treatment, legal aid representation and other welfare-related issues. All prisoners were found to be represented either through the legal aid scheme or by private lawyers.

A total of 44 UTRC meetings were held across the state’s districts during the quarter.

The eligible prisoners were considered for release under various provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the Probation of Offenders Act and other applicable laws. The categories included undertrial prisoners eligible for statutory bail, first-time offenders, prisoners unable to furnish sureties despite being granted bail, those accused of compoundable offences, women prisoners, elderly inmates, sick or infirm prisoners, young offenders, prisoners eligible for probation, and convicts who had completed their sentences or qualified for remission.

The NSLSA said the periodic UTRC meetings are aimed at reducing unnecessary detention, ensuring timely legal assistance, and safeguarding the rights of eligible undertrial prisoners in accordance with the law.
