Kohima, 1st September 2026 (Nokinketer News): Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav on Tuesday reviewed the progress of coffee cultivation in the state during a meeting with officials of the Coffee Board of India and the Department of Land Resources at Raj Bhavan.
The Coffee Board presented the status of coffee cultivation in Nagaland and the Northeast, highlighting the state’s growing potential for specialty and premium coffee. Coffee is currently cultivated in several districts, with both Arabica and Robusta varieties under cultivation.
The meeting reviewed initiatives to expand coffee cultivation, improve productivity and quality, promote mechanisation, and strengthen farmer training and infrastructure. The Coffee Board has been supporting growers through financial assistance, drying yards, mechanisation and capacity-building programmes.
Officials also discussed key challenges, including poor road connectivity, inadequate processing infrastructure, climate-related issues, small landholdings, labour shortages and limited market access. However, opportunities in specialty coffee, organic certification, coffee tourism, value addition, local roasting, café culture and e-commerce were also highlighted.
Emphasising a coordinated approach, the Governor called for strengthening the entire coffee value chain—from cultivation and processing to branding and marketing—to enhance farmers’ incomes and create opportunities for local entrepreneurs and youth.
He expressed confidence that with improved infrastructure, scientific farming practices and stronger market linkages, Nagaland has the potential to emerge as a leading producer of premium coffee in the country.
