Mokokchung, 2nd September 2026 (Nokinketer News): A sensitisation programme on School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV) was conducted at N.I Jamir Government Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung, on Wednesday. The programme, organised by the SRGBV Committee, Mokokchung, sought to raise awareness among students, teachers and other stakeholders on gender-based violence in schools, child rights, and the collective responsibility of ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
During the session on School-Related Gender-Based Violence, the resource person explained that SRGBV includes physical, sexual and psychological violence, as well as bullying, harassment and discrimination based on gender, occurring in or around educational institutions. Participants were informed that such violence may occur between students or involve teachers and other school personnel.
The session also highlighted various forms of SRGBV, including physical, verbal, emotional, psychological and online abuse. Students were encouraged to respect personal boundaries, communicate respectfully, and report incidents of bullying or harassment rather than remaining silent.
Emphasising the role of educators, the speakers urged teachers and school staff to foster a safe and inclusive environment by listening to students without prejudice, taking their concerns seriously and linking them with appropriate support services.
Participants were encouraged to follow the three-step approach of “Stay Safe, Speak Up and Support” when confronted with incidents of gender-based violence. Students were advised to remove themselves from unsafe situations, seek help from trusted adults or school authorities, and support survivors without assigning blame.
Speaking on the roles and functions of the SRGBV Committee, Shri Imtitoshi, Supervisor, District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Mokokchung, outlined the responsibilities of various stakeholders in preventing and responding to violence in school settings.
Smti. Imnatola, Supervisor, DCPU, Mokokchung, spoke on child rights, highlighting the four core principles of survival, protection, development and participation. She emphasised that every child is entitled to life, health, education, protection from abuse and exploitation, opportunities for holistic development, and the right to express views on matters affecting them. The speakers underscored that schools should be safe spaces where children can learn and grow without fear. They also stressed the importance of empathy, equality and mutual respect, urging students to contribute towards creating a supportive and violence-free school environment.
