Mokokchung, 1st September, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Mokokchung District Congress Committee (MDCC) has condemned the registration of an FIR in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, against Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, describing the move as “retaliatory” and politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the committee said the FIR followed Rahul Gandhi’s demand for legal action over the alleged “purification ritual” conducted at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani after a public meeting addressed by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge.
The MDCC alleged that the ritual was an affront to the dignity of a senior Dalit leader and ran contrary to the constitutional principles of equality and the prohibition of untouchability. It said Rahul Gandhi’s call for accountability was consistent with his role as Leader of the Opposition.
The committee further alleged that, instead of proceeding against those responsible for the alleged act, the authorities had initiated legal action against Rahul Gandhi. It termed the FIR a misuse of law intended to silence dissent and divert attention from what it described as an “anti-Dalit mindset”.
The MDCC asserted that such actions would not deter Rahul Gandhi or the Indian National Congress from continuing its campaign against caste discrimination, social prejudice and what it called political authoritarianism.
Demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the FIR, the committee also appealed to citizens to uphold the constitutional values of fraternity, dignity and justice.
