Mokokchung, 6th September 2026 (Nokinketer News): The 14th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Tournament (All Nagaland Open) will be held from September 16 to 18, 2026, at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex, Mokokchung. The biennial tournament is organised by the Luke Sasong Sporting Association under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union.
The tournament commemorates the legacy of Luke Sasong, one of Mangmetong village’s most distinguished sons. Born on September 9, 1913, Luke Sasong passed away at the age of 27 but left behind a lasting legacy as one of the village’s earliest educationists, a pioneering Naga student leader, a freedom fighter during the British era, and a committed Christian leader.
Originally named Sasongdangba by his parents, he was given the name “Luke” by American missionary teachers in recognition of his wisdom and compassion, qualities they likened to those of St. Luke. He served as a pioneering Naga student leader from 1932 to 1935 and was elected President of the Ao Students’ Conference in 1938. He continues to be remembered as a symbol of scholarship, courage, leadership, patriotism, and Christian service.
The memorial tournament was instituted to honour his enduring legacy and to promote sportsmanship, youth development, and community unity—values that Luke Sasong championed throughout his life. Over the years, the tournament has grown into one of Nagaland’s prominent state-level volleyball competitions.
The upcoming edition is expected to witness intense competition, with defending champions MH-10, Kohima aiming to secure a third consecutive title after emerging victorious in both the 2022 and 2024 editions. Organisers expect several strong contenders from across the state to challenge for the championship.
The tournament carries a total prize pool of Rs. 1.85 lakh. The champions will receive Rs. 80,000, while the runners-up will be awarded Rs. 50,000. The third- and fourth-placed teams will receive Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 15,000, respectively. Individual awards carrying a cash prize of Rs. 5,000 each will be presented to the Best Setter, Best Spiker, and the Player of the Tournament.
The competition is open to teams from across Nagaland, with eligibility restricted to players who are indigenous Nagas of the state.
