Mokokchung, 19th October 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Asetkong Kaketshir Telungjem Mungdang (AKTM) inaugurated a two-day Skill Development Programme on Self-Sustenance at Kobulong EAC Subdivision on Oct 19, with over 60 youths participating in the initiative aimed at promoting self-reliance, preserving traditional knowledge and encouraging entrepreneurship.

Held under the theme “Pei Ketmung ajanga litetba shisashir,” the programme is scheduled to conclude on Oct 20.

AKTM president Bendangkumzuk said the initiative was organised in pursuance of a resolution adopted at the organisation’s 43rd general conference. He said the programme seeks to equip young people with practical skills and create opportunities for self-employment.

He emphasised that the community possesses valuable indigenous skills, knowledge and resources that can be developed into sustainable livelihood opportunities. He expressed hope that the training would inspire participants to become more skilled, independent and self-reliant.

According to the AKTM Women Coordinator, participants are receiving hands-on training in basket making, preparation of Amzü, a traditional sticky-rice biscuit, tapioca bhujia production and banana chips processing.

Special emphasis has been placed on Amzü, a traditional delicacy passed down through generations that is gradually disappearing. The initiative aims to preserve this culinary heritage while exploring its potential as a marketable local product.

In addition to traditional food processing and handicrafts, participants are learning marketing, photography and video editing to help them promote their products and reach wider markets. Local resource persons are sharing indigenous knowledge and practical expertise during the training sessions.

The second day of the programme will feature training in shiitake mushroom cultivation, along with sessions on business planning, product promotion and establishing market linkages through both online and offline platforms.

Through the initiative, AKTM aims to strengthen youth skills, preserve traditional knowledge and promote entrepreneurship as a pathway towards self-sustenance and sustainable livelihoods.
