Mokokchung, 17th April, 2026 (www.nokinketer.in): As part of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) Annual General Meeting 2026 in Kohima, an official meeting was convened between the AFI leadership and the district athletics associations of Nagaland.

The meeting witnessed the participation of representatives from all district associations across the State, marking a significant step towards strengthening grassroots athletics and institutional coordination. The interactive session provided a platform for meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas between the national federation and district-level stakeholders.

Key deliberations focused on the restructuring and strengthening of district associations were the need to conduct more regular competitions and meets at the grassroots level, and the expansion of the AFI’s education and certification programs for coaches and technical officials. Emphasis was laid on capacity building, standardization of practices, and creating a robust pipeline for talent identification and development across Nagaland.

The meeting was addressed by Dr. Lalit Kumar Bhanot, President of the South Asian Athletics Federation; Bahadur Singh, President, AFI; Adille Sumariwala, Vice President, World Athletics; and Abu Metha, Vice President, AFI. The dignitaries highlighted the importance of inclusivity, grassroots engagement, and the role of athletics in fostering national integration and youth development.

In continuation of its commitment to social responsibility, the AFI leadership and delegates also visited the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home as part of the AFI Community Outreach Program. During the visit, the delegation interacted warmly with the children and local community, offering words of encouragement and motivation. Gifts were distributed in a gesture of goodwill, making the interaction both meaningful and memorable.

The outreach initiative was led by renowned sportsperson and Padma Shri and Arjuna Awardee Anju Bobby George, along with a distinguished team of athletes and officials. The presence of accomplished sportspersons served as an inspiration to the children, reinforcing the values of discipline, perseverance, and aspiration through sport.

Coincidentally it was the 53rd Foundation Day of the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home during the visit. Members of the Sunshine Orchestra – a musical initiative that is mentored by A. R. Rahman – presented a few musical presentations and words of appreciation by Neibanuo the mother of the orphanage.

These engagements reflect the continued commitment of the AFI to not only strengthen athletics at all levels but also to contribute positively to society through community-oriented initiatives. The activities in Kohima underline the broader vision of the AFI to integrate sport with social development and nation-building.
