
Friday, May 29, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Home Department, Government of Nagaland, has directed all village authorities across the state to strictly enforce the ban on Single-Use Plastic (SUP) in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment dated February 14, 2026, and the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021 notified by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
The directive also reiterated earlier notifications issued by the Urban Development Department regarding the prohibition of various plastic items in the state.
According to the notification, the banned items include all plastic carry bags irrespective of thickness or size, plastic cutlery such as plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws, Styrofoam (thermocol) decorative materials, polythene, nylon, Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC), polypropylene and polystyrene products.
The department further reiterated the prohibition on the use of flex banners, boards and posters by departments, institutions and government agencies during official functions and programmes.
Additional banned SUP items include ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic balloon sticks, plastic flags, candy and ice-cream sticks, thermocol decorations, trays, wrapping films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, plastic stirrers, and PVC banners below 100 microns.
The notification also recalled the total ban on packaged drinking water bottles below 20 litres capacity during meetings, functions, seminars and for personal consumption.
All Deputy Commissioners have been directed to immediately disseminate the instructions to village authorities and ensure strict compliance. They have also been asked to take measures for mandatory collection and safe disposal of banned SUP waste in their respective jurisdictions.
