Friday, June 26, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Nagaland Police organised a 5Km Awareness Run Against Drugs on 26th June, 2026, at Kohima to mark the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Participants covered the designated route from High School Junction to Police Headquarters (PHQ). A total of 308 participants joined the run, reflecting public support for the anti-drug awareness campaign.

The event was conducted under the theme “One Run, One Voice, A Drug-Free Nagaland – Choose Life, Not Drugs”, which called for a united effort to combat drug abuse and encourage individuals to choose healthy and positive lifestyles. The run was flagged off by ADGP (Adm), Renchamo P. Kikon, IPS.

Addressing the gathering, Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma, IPS, expressed concern over the growing incidence of drug peddling and substance abuse in the state, noting that the easy availability and accessibility of drugs continue to pose a serious challenge, particularly among the youth. He called for greater vigilance and collective action from all sections of society.

Sharma emphasised that effective rehabilitation requires proper psychological and clinical counselling. He observed that many people often fail to distinguish between psychological or medical counselling and religious counselling. While religion provides moral and ethical guidance, he noted that addiction requires professional treatment and medical intervention. He also pointed out that the State’s rehabilitation infrastructure remains inadequate.

Highlighting the potential role of trained professionals, Sharma said there are many educated youths with backgrounds in psychology and related fields who remain unemployed and could be further trained to assist in counselling and rehabilitation services. He noted that there is the need to promote a culture of clinical and psychological counselling.

He stated that drugs are not a solution to challenges such as depression, unemployment or financial hardship, but instead worsen such problems and have adverse consequences for individuals, families and communities.

Sharma further encouraged citizens to actively cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting cases of drug abuse and trafficking, noting that such actions could help save lives. He assured that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential. He urged the youth to make informed choices and seek appropriate help and support when faced with difficulties.

The event recognised outstanding performers across various categories. In the Men’s Open category, Shianjiu T. (28) secured the first position, followed by Kelengoto Kulnu (22) in second place. In the Women’s Open category, Songmo P. (24) emerged as the winner, while Cekrotalu (20) secured the second position.
