
Kohima, August 10 (Nokinketer News): Governor of Nagaland Nand Kishore Yadav reviewed the functioning of the Department of State Taxes at Lok Bhavan, Kohima, on Monday, with officials presenting the department’s revenue performance, initiatives, challenges and future roadmap.
The department informed that Nagaland currently has 11,592 active registered taxpayers across Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Chümoukedima zones.
State tax collection increased from ₹1,427.03 crore in 2024-25 to ₹1,597.51 crore in 2025-26, registering a rise of ₹170.47 crore. During the first quarter of 2026-27, tax collection stood at ₹466.98 crore, an increase of ₹23.96 crore over the corresponding period of the previous year.
GST remained the largest component of the state’s tax revenue, contributing ₹1,181.88 crore, or 74 per cent, in 2025-26. GST collection has grown substantially from ₹187.57 crore in 2017-18 to ₹1,181.88 crore in 2025-26, while collection for the current financial year stood at ₹450.35 crore up to July 2026.
The department highlighted initiatives including the GST Returns and Adjudication Management System (G-RAMS), N-GAIN, online tax services, awareness campaigns, market surveys and compliance checks. Enforcement measures include action against fake invoices and registrations, inventory checks and monitoring of goods movement through the Railway Parcel Office.
Among its achievements, the department cited recovery of ₹17 crore in petroleum arrears and Nagaland’s ranking first in the Northeast and 16th nationally in the launch of Biometric Aadhaar Authentication Registration.
The department also apprised the Governor of challenges including manpower shortages, the need for upgraded IT infrastructure, increasing workload and detection of tax evasion and unregistered taxpayers.
Under its ‘Vision 2063 and Beyond’, the department has set revenue targets of ₹2,400 crore by 2030, ₹5,000 crore by 2038, ₹11,000 crore by 2047 and ₹50,000 crore by 2063.
The meeting was attended by Finance Commissioner and other officials of the State Taxes Department. The review formed part of the Governor’s ongoing assessment of various state government departments.
