Wednesday, 8th July, 2026 (Nokinketer News): The District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting for Wokha district was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall on July 7 under the chairmanship of Lok Sabha MP and DISHA chairman, Supongmeren Jamir. Deputy Commissioner Wokha, K. Mhathung Tsanglao, co-chaired the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the progress of various Central government schemes, departmental activities and developmental programmes, while deliberating on challenges affecting their implementation in the district.
Addressing the meeting, Supongmeren Jamir underscored the importance of DISHA as a platform for monitoring the implementation of government schemes and ensuring that developmental benefits reach the people effectively.
The departments of Agriculture, Labour and Veterinary made detailed presentations on their programmes, achievements and challenges.
District Agriculture Officer Renathung Kikon informed that under the National Mission on Natural Farming and the National Mission on Edible Oils-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), about 243 hectares covering 14 villages in Wokha district have been brought under oil palm cultivation. He highlighted the difficulties faced by field officers in Ralan block due to the long travel route through Kohima, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts, and stressed the need for a separate sub-division. He also pointed out that the transition to Aadhaar-based Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) payments required Aadhaar seeding, authentication and NPCI mapping of all beneficiaries, making the process both time-consuming and manpower-intensive.
Assistant Labour Commissioner Neimenuo presented the status of the Nagaland Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (NBOCWWB), stating that the district has 1,788 registered workers, of whom 763 are active and 988 inactive. During 2025-26, the board settled eight death claims, provided scholarships to 630 beneficiaries, maternity benefits to five, medical assistance to two and tool grants to 768 workers.
She also briefed the meeting on the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) scheme and the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), citing low coverage due to the predominance of farming activities and difficulties in reaching beneficiaries. She said awareness-cum-registration drives would be conducted in poorly covered villages to improve enrolment.
Chief Veterinary Officer K.N. Zubemo Humtsoe informed that Wokha district records an annual meat requirement of 3,614 metric tonnes against local production of 1,964.67 metric tonnes, leaving a deficit of 1,649.55 metric tonnes valued at around Rs. 36.64 crore.
He said the Livestock Insurance Scheme under the National Livestock Mission, launched in March and implemented from May this year, provides 85% premium support from the department, with beneficiaries contributing the remaining 15%. He also highlighted the Entrepreneurship Development Programme under the National Livestock Mission and convergence initiatives with other stakeholders.
On the Artificial Insemination Technology programme launched in October 2024 in collaboration with KVK-ICAR Wokha, Humtsoe said 165 artificial inseminations have so far resulted in the birth of around 1,350 piglets, recording an 81% success rate. He further informed the meeting that an outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Wokha town, Wokha village, Pangti, Baghty and Chukitong had led to the death of 374 pigs, causing an estimated loss of Rs. 1.04 crore.
During the discussion, Supongmeren Jamir reviewed the implementation of various schemes and assured that issues requiring intervention at higher levels would be taken up with the concerned authorities.
The meeting also discussed poor BSNL network connectivity affecting Census operations, inadequate post office infrastructure, and the need to advertise vacant Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) posts to encourage applications from indigenous Nagas. The Lead Bank Manager also briefed the meeting on agricultural loan disbursement and the challenges faced in extending credit to farmers.
The meeting concluded with a commitment from all stakeholders to address the identified challenges and strengthen the implementation of developmental programmes in Wokha district.
