Nagaland, August 12 (Nokinketer News): Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) S. Supongmeren Jamir has appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to defer the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, until comprehensive consultations are held with all stakeholders and political parties.

In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, Supongmeren said that any amendment to the FCRA should be undertaken only after building broad consensus, considering its implications for national unity, harmony, and the country’s secular and diverse character.

Referring to the objectives of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, he stated that the law was enacted to ensure that foreign contributions do not adversely affect national security, sovereignty, or public order. He expressed concern that the proposed amendment could have far-reaching consequences for educational institutions, charitable organizations, humanitarian agencies, healthcare services, orphanages, and organizations working for economically weaker sections and persons with disabilities.

Jamir also contended that the proposed legislation could affect organizations involved in nation-building and social welfare. He further stated that the bill may have implications relating to Article 300A of the Constitution, which provides that no person shall be deprived of property except by the authority of law.

Citing available figures, the MP said that around 22,498 FCRA licences have been cancelled across the country, while 15,212 licences were not renewed and have expired. He added that in Nagaland, nearly 70 percent of the 262 FCRA registrations have been cancelled. According to him, about 14,444 organizations across India are engaged in education, healthcare, orphanage management, social welfare, and charitable activities.

Appealing to the Union Government, Jamir urged that the proposed FCRA Bill, 2026, should not be taken up until all stakeholders collectively deliberate on the matter. He maintained that the FCRA should continue to promote nation-building, development, and the welfare of citizens.
