Mon, 18th August 2026 (Nokinketer News): Governor of Nagaland, Nand Kishore Yadav, accompanied by Commissioner & Secretary to Governor, Thavaseelan K., IAS, Fiirhesie Nyuwi, and other official dignitaries, visited Longwa village in Mon district on Tuesday.
Upon arrival at the 42 Assam Rifles COB helipad in Longwa, the Governor was received by Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Wennyei Konyak, NCS; Superintendent of Police; MP Rajya Sabha, Phangnon Konyak; Advisor, Konngam Konyak; and the Chief Angh of Longwa, Tonyei Konyak.
Addressing the gathering at the Chief Angh’s residence, the Governor expressed that it was a privilege to interact with the Konyak community. Recalling the recent severe natural disaster in Mon district, he noted that the tragedy caused immense suffering, loss of precious lives, and widespread structural damage. On behalf of the people of the state, he extended heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families.
Highlighting the state’s vulnerability to natural hazards, Yadav stated that heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides can cause catastrophic damage within a very short span of time. He noted that the impact extends far beyond physical damage, deeply affecting lives and livelihoods.
The Governor commended the District Administration, NSDMA, SDRF, Police, security forces, line departments, civil society organizations (CSOs), churches, youth bodies, and volunteers for their selfless dedication during search, rescue, relief, and restoration operations. He praised the people of Mon and the Konyak community for standing together in solidarity, calling community spirit and mutual aid one of Nagaland’s greatest strengths.
Stressing the road ahead, Yadav emphasized that while immediate relief efforts were vital, the next crucial task is rehabilitation and reconstruction. He called upon both the government and the public to work hand-in-hand to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods, and prioritize the repair of damaged road infrastructure.
He further urged that future infrastructure projects be planned with greater resilience against extreme natural disasters, adding that development must go hand-in-hand with environmental protection. “Disasters cannot always be prevented, but through preparedness, planning, and timely action, we can significantly reduce their impact,” he remarked, urging the public to follow building regulations, land-use norms, and official safety advisories.
Yadav also encouraged the local youth to play an active role as partners in disaster management—specifically in generating awareness, communication, evacuation, and community support—to strengthen systems right from the village level upwards.
Assuring continued assistance from both the Central and State governments for relief and restoration, the Governor expressed confidence that a resilient Mon would be built through a unified partnership between local institutions, the public, and the government.
Earlier in the program, Konyak Union (KU) president, Yamao Konyak, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the visit and briefed the delegation on the heavy losses caused by the landslide and floods on July 19.
Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) president, Temwang Konyak, highlighted that 7 schools and 318 students were directly affected by the catastrophe.
In his vote of thanks, Chief Angh of Longwa Village, Tonyei Konyak, appreciated the Governor’s delegation for their visit and submitted a request to the state government for urgent road upgradation to aid in rebuilding the village’s infrastructure.
