Kohima, 19th Aug. 2026 (Nokinketer News): As part of the Living Morung initiative, the Department of Art and Culture organised a two-day programme on “Sharing on Concepts of Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Heritage” at the State Academy of Music and Dance, Kohima, on August 19.
Speaking as the special guest, NEZCC Director Alobo Naga said culture must not only be preserved but kept alive through continuous sharing between generations. He stressed that traditional knowledge would disappear if elders stopped sharing and young people stopped learning, urging the youth to embrace modernity while remaining rooted in their heritage.
He encouraged young people to learn songs, dances, stories, languages and traditions from their elders, describing them as the future custodians of culture. He also expressed hope that the Living Morung initiative would bridge the gap between elders and youth, ensuring that cultural heritage continues to thrive.
Director of Art and Culture Adela Moa, in her welcome address, said the traditional Morung once served as centres for imparting discipline, values, folklore, arts, crafts and indigenous knowledge. However, rapid modernisation has led to their decline, resulting in the gradual loss of traditional skills and cultural identity.
She said the State Government launched the Living Morung initiative in 2005 to revive these traditions by promoting intergenerational learning and preserving indigenous knowledge. The department has since been implementing the programme across villages in all districts, bringing together participants and cultural practitioners to share traditional knowledge and skills.
The programme also featured exhibitions and demonstrations of traditional weaving and handicrafts, along with cultural performances.
