Kohima, 5th September 2026 (Nokinketer News): The State-Level Teachers’ Day celebration 2026, organised by the Department of School Education, was held at the Local Ground (Khuochiezie), Kohima, on Saturday, with Advisor for School Education, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, attending as the Special Guest.
Extending Teachers’ Day greetings, Dr. Yhome highlighted Nagaland’s remarkable progress in literacy since attaining statehood in 1963. He said the state’s literacy rate has risen from 21.95 per cent in 1963 to 95.7 per cent in 2025, making Nagaland the third most literate state in the country. He congratulated and thanked the state’s 32,714 teachers serving in both government and private schools for their contribution to achieving this milestone.
Describing teaching as a noble profession, Dr. Yhome said teachers make no distinction among students when it comes to providing love, care and guidance. He urged educators to prepare Generation Z and Generation Alpha for future leadership, noting that today’s students will be leading public institutions, government and the private sector by 2035.
The Advisor said the Department of School Education is transforming the state’s school ecosystem through three key pillars—infrastructure, human resource management and curriculum design. He stated that infrastructure challenges can be addressed through developmental projects, while improved teacher training, stronger coordination between schools, field officers and the directorate, and better school management systems would strengthen governance and administration.
On curriculum reforms, Dr. Yhome said the government plans to introduce world-class educational practices through innovative curriculum design aimed at developing students’ skills and competencies. Addressing the students, he encouraged them to believe in their abilities, saying they possess the potential to excel not only at the state level but also nationally and internationally. He added that the government’s vision is to nurture Generation Z, Generation Alpha and Generation Beta into globally competitive citizens.
A total of 12 teachers from five districts received the State Teachers’ Award 2026. The awardees were Vika S. Sumi (GHS Sitimi, Kiphire), Albert Tungo (GHS Forest Colony, Kohima), Mhasikholie Sachu (TMGHSS, Kohima), Kezhalezo Solo (GHS PWD Colony, Kohima), C. Pangjei Keikung (GHS Yachem, Longleng), Nirmal Sarkar (BGHSS, Longleng), Longrimendang (GHS Mangmetong, Mokokchung), S. Hongen Thangti Chang (Shamator A, Shamator), Newkai (GHSS Shamator), P. Thsangtsumong Yimchunger (GHSS Shamator), Hitilo Kath (GHSS Tseminyu) and Imnajungla (Little Star Higher Secondary School, Dimapur).
The School Safety Excellence Award 2026, presented under the Nagaland Disaster Management School Safety Policy Compliance Course, was conferred on Nukshitemjen, PT, GHS Kubolong, Mokokchung, and Wanglem W. Konyak, PT Scout Master, Holy Angels School, Tizit Town, Mon.
