Nagaland eyes self-sufficiency, stronger higher education under Vision 2047

Kohima, 10^th September 2026 (Nokinketer News): Nagaland is working to strengthen higher education and reduce its dependence on imported agricultural, horticultural and livestock products as part of its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 and Viksit Bharat 2047 priorities.

A consultation meeting convened by Development Commissioner Y. Kikheto Sema at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat here on Thursday brought together representatives of Nagaland University, the School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS), Medziphema, College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Jalukie, and various line departments.

Kikheto stressed the need to strengthen higher education institutions in the State to reduce the estimated ₹1,500 crore spent annually by families on education outside Nagaland. He said the State’s peaceful environment and favourable climate could also help attract students from neighbouring states.

On agriculture and horticulture, he called for updated field-level data on demand, production and imports to identify areas where Nagaland could attain self-sufficiency and eventually explore export opportunities. He also urged greater research on jhum cultivation and suggested incorporating relevant aspects into the agricultural curriculum.

The meeting also discussed gaps in meat, milk and egg production. Sema called for measures to boost local livestock production and reduce dependence on imports. Research into improved smoked-meat processing was also suggested to enhance quality and market opportunities.

Nagaland University Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Venuh said the university had substantial research and data that could be better utilised for policymaking and planning.

Sema said the Vision 2047 document for Nagaland is expected to be released by December 2026. He cited estimates of around ₹1,000 crore spent on imported meat and meat products, besides significant deficiencies in agricultural and horticultural production.

He said the immediate priority under Vision 2047 should be self-sufficiency in essential sectors, followed by export promotion, and called on departments and institutions to submit a consolidated report for further action.
