Mokokchung, 11th September 2026 (Nokinketer News): The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) has urged the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) to stop the routine issuance of special or temporary commercial permits to outside businesses conducting short-term sales in the town.
In a representation to the MMC, the chamber said frequent temporary commercial activities were affecting permanent businesses, which bear year-round costs including rents, salaries, taxes, municipal fees, licences and other statutory obligations.
The MCCI pointed out that Mokokchung has a relatively small market with limited consumer purchasing capacity. It said temporary sales of products already available through local establishments could therefore have a disproportionate impact on permanent businesses, particularly when such activities are repeatedly permitted.
Citing the recent “Bombay Make Up Bazar” as a case in point, the chamber said the establishment operated in Mokokchung from August 18 to 28 under a special permit issued by the MMC and adversely affected local businesses dealing in similar products. It further raised concern over the subsequent extension of the same business from August 29 to September 5 through another special permit.
The MCCI maintained that it was not opposed to healthy competition or legitimate economic activity. However, it stressed that short-term commercial activity should not undermine businesses that have invested in the town and contributed to its economy over the years.
The chamber urged the MMC to adopt a precautionary approach and avoid granting temporary permits for activities that directly compete with existing permanent businesses, except in cases where there is a clear and demonstrable benefit to the town.
It also called for mandatory consultation with the MCCI before granting such permits, particularly where proposed activities involve goods or services already offered by local establishments. The chamber said consultation would enable the MMC to assess prevailing market conditions and the likely impact on the business community.
The MCCI further demanded a clear and transparent policy governing temporary commercial permits, including limits on their duration and frequency, eligibility criteria, statutory compliance, safeguards against unfair competition and appropriate fees and conditions.
It urged the MMC to reconsider the present practice, restrict such permits to exceptional circumstances, consult the MCCI before approvals and review permits already issued in view of their wider economic impact.
