Mokokchung, 14th October 2026 (Nokinketer News): SDO (Civil), Mokokchung, Ajay Moktan, IAS, inaugurated the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana Seva Setu Abhiyan at the DC’s Office Complex, Mokokchung, on October 14, 2026, to promote rooftop solar installations and encourage households to adopt solar energy.
Speaking at the programme, Moktan highlighted the benefits of rooftop solar (RTS) systems, stating that they can help households generate electricity and significantly reduce monthly power bills. He explained that the scheme provides Central and State government subsidies, with beneficiaries reportedly receiving 70–80% of the total installation cost directly into their bank accounts.
He informed that more than 26 rooftop solar vendors are empanelled in Nagaland, with installation costs varying according to the vendor and the capacity (kW) selected by the beneficiary. Installation is carried out by a vendor of the beneficiary’s choice, with free maintenance provided for up to five years. Citizens can also avail themselves of loans for installation.
Emphasising the growing demand for electricity in the state, Moktan encouraged households to adopt solar energy and urged people to spread awareness about its benefits. He also informed that the last date for eligible beneficiaries to avail themselves of the subsidy under the scheme is March 31, 2027.
During the programme, beneficiaries shared their experiences after installing rooftop solar systems. Asung Jamir, a resident of Mokokchung Compound, said he installed the system in July and saw his monthly electricity bill drop from Rs. 1,700 to Rs. 230. He added that the installation took only one and a half days and that he received the subsidy within two months.
Another beneficiary shared that installing rooftop solar had significantly reduced household gas consumption and the use of firewood, adding that solar power had made it easier to use an induction cooktop at home.
Executive Engineer, Mokokchung Electrical Division, Er. Chutsusie Thowachu, said the growing population and increased use of electrical machinery had led to rising energy demand. With conventional thermal and hydroelectric sources facing increasing pressure, he said the government was promoting solar energy as an alternative to help households reduce electricity expenses through subsidies.
He clarified that rooftop solar installations under the scheme are currently available for domestic use and not for commercial purposes.
Thowachu further informed that empanelled vendors, including M/s Smart Tech and Native Enterprises, would be available at the DC’s Office Complex, Mokokchung, from October 14 to 16, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, to assist citizens with registration and other requirements.
He urged residents of Mokokchung district to visit the camp and avail themselves of the benefits under the scheme.
