Friday, 5th June, 2026 (Nokinketer News): World Environment Day 2026 was observed at the Kohima Peace Memorial & Eco Park, Kohima on June 5, 2026 under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The programme, held at the OpenAir Theatre, was graced by C.L. John, Minister for Environment, Forests & Climate Change and Village Guards, as the Special Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Minister C.L. John called upon citizens, particularly the younger generation, to take an active role in protecting the environment.
The Minister stated that the Kohima Peace Memorial & Eco Park was constructed through collaboration between the Government of Nagaland and Japan under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio for initiating the partnership with Japan to commemorate the memories of World War II through the development of the park in a grand and beautiful manner.
Recalling his childhood days, the Minister said that tree saplings planted by students decades ago have now grown into large trees, demonstrating the long-term impact of conservation efforts. He noted that World Environment Day was observed in Longleng last year in collaboration with churches, during which numerous trees were planted. He expressed satisfaction that the occasion was once again being observed across the state by government departments, educational institutions, churches, NGOs, and other organisations.
Emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation, he urged every participant to plant at least one tree. He said a healthy environment is essential for the well-being of society and warned that failure to protect nature would ultimately affect human health and livelihoods.
The Minister stressed that environmental awareness must begin with the younger generation and encouraged students to develop a strong commitment to safeguarding nature. “Let us not destroy what God has blessed us with,” he said.
Highlighting environmental challenges in Nagaland, John identified forest fires, particularly jungle burning for cultivation purposes, as a major cause of environmental degradation. He also expressed concern over the continued prevalence of hunting, noting that forests require birds and wildlife to maintain ecological balance.
Calling for a conservation movement, he remarked that just as the practice of headhunting had been abandoned, society should also work towards ending the hunting of animals and birds. He said students and youth must play a leading role in creating awareness and driving positive change.
The Minister further pointed out that rising temperatures in Kohima, Dimapur, and other parts of the state were visible effects of global warming. He also reminded citizens that the government has already banned single-use plastics as part of efforts to reduce environmental pollution.
Expressing concern over poor waste disposal habits, he observed that while Nagas are known for their good dressing sense, civic sense often remains lacking, citing the widespread littering of plastic bottles, tobacco sachets, and other waste in public places. He urged citizens to adopt responsible habits and work collectively towards maintaining a cleaner and greener Nagaland.
Vedpal Singh, IFS, PCCF &HoFF, described the environment as the ecosystem that sustains life and stressed that environmental protection is essential for human well-being. Highlighting concerns such as pollution, global warming, and plastic contamination, he said human activities have caused significant damage to natural ecosystems.
He urged citizens, especially the younger generation, to adopt sustainable practices such as reducing plastic use, conserving resources, and minimizing waste. Emphasizing personal responsibility, he called on everyone to contribute towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
The event was chaired by M. Senthil Kumar, IFS, APCCF (E&CC). The programme also featured a special number by Fernwood School, felicitation of winners of various competitions, and the official release of the Nagaland State Biodiversity Board logo.
The observance concluded with a vote of thanks by Sidramappa M. Chalkapure, IFS, CCF (P&D), followed by a ceremonial tree planting by the Special Guest, reaffirming the commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
