
Mokokchung, 8th May, 2026 (Nokinketer News): Chief Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, Sentiyanger Imchen, IAS, released the ‘Report on Income Disparity in Nagaland’ on 7th May at the Chief Secretary’s Conference Hall, Nagaland Civil Secretariat, Kohima.
The report was launched in the presence of Akunu S Meyase, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland; Neidilhou Keditsu, Director; and other senior officers and officials of the Department of Economics and Statistics, Government of Nagaland.
The ‘Report on Income Disparity in Nagaland’ is the outcome of a project undertaken as part of the central sector scheme of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) – Support for Statistical Strengthening Sub-scheme – conducted in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad, India.
Key Findings of the Report
- Survey Period: The field survey was undertaken between October 2024 and December 2024, with data pertaining to the calendar year 2024.
- Sample Size: The state-wide sample comprised 4,396 households – 1,315 households from 60 urban wards and 3,080 households from 140 rural villages.
- State-Level Inequality: The Gini coefficient of Nagaland is 0.46, indicating high income inequality. Rural Nagaland has a Gini coefficient of 0.42, while urban Nagaland stands at 0.44, suggesting marginally higher disparity in urban areas.
- Income Share: The bottom 50 percent of households receive only about 18 percent of the state’s total income, whereas the top 5 percent receive approximately 21 percent of the gross income.
- Monthly Income Gap: The top 5 percent earn an average monthly income of ₹71,028, while the bottom 50 percent receive an average of just ₹1,639 – a difference of over 44 times.
- District-wise Disparity:
- Longleng recorded the highest income inequality in the state with a Gini coefficient of 0.492.
- Phek recorded the lowest disparity with a Gini coefficient of 0.366.
- In rural areas: Longleng (0.456) highest; Zunheboto (0.330) lowest.
- In urban areas: Longleng (0.509) highest; Zunheboto (0.359) lowest.
The report aims to serve as a key reference for policymakers and stakeholders in addressing income inequalities across the state.
