Thursday, 28th May 2026 (Nokinketer News): Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda has assured support for upgrading the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Kohima, into a super-specialty institute and for establishing a Greenfield Medical College at Naga Ki City in Chümoukedima district.
The assurance was given during a meeting with Nagaland Minister for Health & Family Welfare P. Paiwang Konyak at the Union Minister’s official residence in New Delhi on May 27.
According to an official statement, the meeting was highly positive, with Nadda assuring all possible support for proposals aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and services in Nagaland.
During the meeting, Paiwang proposed the upgradation of NIMSR, Kohima, under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), stating that the State Government intends to introduce postgraduate courses as the first batch of MBBS students is expected to complete their studies in 2028. He said the introduction of PG courses would help address the shortage of specialist doctors in the State.
The Minister also proposed the establishment of a Greenfield Medical College and an AIIMS-like institute at Naga Ki City to bridge gaps in tertiary healthcare, medical education and specialist services in Nagaland.
He stated that the proposed institute would not only serve Nagaland but also neighbouring states, while promoting medical tourism in line with the Government of India’s Act East Policy.
Paiwang further requested the Centre to establish a State Cancer Institute under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS). Highlighting the increasing incidence of cancer in the State, he said such an institute was essential for strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care services while reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside Nagaland.
The Minister also urged the Centre to upgrade the State Mental Health Institute into a Centre of Excellence under the National Mental Health Programme and sought approval for setting up a State Allied Health Professional Institute at Kohima to strengthen allied healthcare education and skilled manpower in the sector.
In addition, Paiwang proposed the establishment of Accident and Trauma Centres in the remaining 12 districts of Nagaland to ensure equitable access to emergency healthcare services. He also appealed for continuation of the PM-ABHIM scheme for further strengthening public health infrastructure in the State.
